Course overview

The rapid integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into various professional fields has brought forth numerous opportunities and challenges, particularly within counselor education. The session will provide an overview of ethical guidelines, emphasizing fundamental principles such as accountability, transparency, and competence. 

 A central focus of the presentation will be on the guidelines set forth by the American Counseling Association (ACA) and the National Board for Certified Counselors (NBCC) regarding AI usage. Attendees will gain an in-depth understanding of these guidelines and learn how to apply them to ensure ethical compliance in their practices. By examining real-world scenarios, participants will better understand how to navigate the complexities associated with AI implementation. 

 The webinar will also explore common ethical challenges, including academic integrity, training opportunities, and applications in educational settings. Through interactive discussions and case studies, participants will explore these issues, identifying potential pitfalls and developing strategies to mitigate them.

 The session aims to equip counselor educators with the knowledge and tools necessary to integrate AI technologies ethically and effectively into their work. By fostering a deeper understanding of the ethical landscape surrounding AI, this webinar will help ensure that these advanced technologies enhance, rather than compromise, the integrity and efficacy of counseling and educational practices.

Jeffrey Parsons, Ph.D., LPCC-S, NCC

Dr. Jeffrey Parsons is a licensed professional clinical counselor supervisor (LPCC-S) and National Certified Counselor (NCC). He holds a Ph.D. in Counselor Education from the University of Iowa. Dr. Parsons has been employed at Lindsey Wilson College for the past twenty years, where he has worked extensively with students from the Appalachian Mountains of eastern Kentucky. He serves as the CACREP Liaison and Director of Assessment for the School of Professional Counseling at LWC. Other roles have included the chair for the CACREP Board of Directors, vice chair of the Kentucky Licensure Board, and member of the NBCC Ethics Council. He and his wife, Lisa, live in Berea, Kentucky and have five adult children.

Daniel Romero, Ph.D., LPCC-S, NCC

Daniel Romero, Ph.D., LPCC-S, NCC, is an associate professor in his 11th year serving at Lindsey Wilson College as core faculty in the School of Professional Counseling. Dr. Romero teaches counseling courses at the doctorate (CACREP-accredited), master’s (CACREP-accredited), and undergraduate levels, and delivers courses in seated, virtual, and online formats. Dr. Romero has recently presented at ACA, ACES, SACES, and KCA in the areas of clinical supervision, counselor preparation for work with Spanish-speaking and Latinx clients, student engagement, and counseling Gen Z clients. Dr. Romero serves on the ACA Ethics Committee, chairs the LWC cultural affairs and enrichment committee, and has served on several faculty search committees.

Marisa White, Ph.D., LPC

Dr. Marisa White has a PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision with a strong counselor identity and experience in several areas related to counselor education, including teaching, counseling, supervision, research, advocacy, and service to the profession. She is also a licensed professional counselor (LPC-Ohio). She has been teaching since 2006 and has taught a variety of classes at the bachelor, master, and doctorate levels. She also enjoys being a guest speaker and presenting information at local, state, regional, and national conferences. As a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC Ohio), she has worked with diverse populations including people with addiction disorders, clients who have been convicted of sexual offenses, and clients with a HIV+ status. She worked primarily in outpatient community mental health serving marginalized client populations. Dr. White’s areas of expertise include counseling ethics, social justice advocacy in the counseling profession, and the use of technology in counseling.

Patrice Callery, Ph.D., LPC

Dr. Patrice Callery is a Professor of Counseling at Lindsey Wilson College. She has served as a Regional Academic Director for nine years and served the college for the past 16 years. Dr. Callery trains future Counselors by providing clinical supervision, teaching at the Masters and Doctoral levels and supervising Counseling faculty. Dr. Callery is licensed in Ohio and Kentucky as a Licensed Professional Counselor. She has served as a Counselor and Clinical.
