Course overview

Supervisors are ethically responsible for monitoring the influence of culture on the supervisory relationship and helping supervisees manage cultural issues with their clients. Unfortunately, supervisors have cultural blindspots that result in cultural ruptures in the supervisory relationship. Cultural humility has demonstrated it has the potential to mitigate the impact of cultural ruptures on the supervisory working alliance. This presentation will discuss the dangers of cultural ruptures and the importance of the supervisor cultivating cultural humility. The participants will be introduced to examples of cultural ruptures from current research and strategies for fostering cultural humility in supervision.

DeAron Washington, Ph.D.

Dr. DeAron Washington serves as an Assistant Professor of Counseling at Belhaven University. He earned his PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. As a Licensed Professional Counselor, Dr. Washington specializes in counseling couples and families. His doctoral dissertation explored cultural humility and its impact on the supervisory working alliance. Actively involved in various professional organizations, he has also contributed his expertise through numerous presentations at these conferences.

Abigail Mills, LPC

Abi Mills completed her bachelor's degree at the University of South Alabama while concurrently serving as a student EMT in Mobile. She subsequently attained a master's degree from the distinguished Marriage and Family Therapy program at the University of Mobile. Currently, she is serving as a clinician in private practice, nearing the fulfillment of her LPC requirements. Furthermore, Abi is actively pursuing a Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision while fulfilling the role of an adjunct professor at New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Abi ardently advocates for the profound potential of integrative care, employing integrated modalities of trauma-focused work that embody the principles of interpersonal neurobiology.

Montray St. James, PLPC

Montray St. James is a dedicated and compassionate PLPC specializing in addiction recovery and trauma-informed care. Originally hailing from Arkansas, Montray began his academic credentials at Ouachita Baptist University earning his bachelor's degree then to NOBTS for his masters. Montray integrates evidence-based practices with a holistic approach to support clients on their recovery journeys. Currently practicing in New Orleans, he uses EMDR therapy to address co-occurring trauma and substance use disorders. Montray is committed to providing personalized, compassionate care, empowering individuals to heal and thrive. Montray’s commitment to his clients is evident in his personalized approach to counseling, where he prioritizes creating a safe and supportive environment for healing. Tsuwainla Jamir is a counselor at Coastline Counseling & Partners and Northlake Behavioral Health System Louisiana. She earned her MA in counseling in Clinical Mental health from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. As a Provisional Licensed Professional Counselor, she works with couples, families, and individuals.
