Course overview

Counselor educators and supervisors frequently navigate challenges with supervisees who are struggling with their professional development. In these situations, educators and supervisors are called upon to make important judgments and have difficult conversations with trainees. In this training, participants will learn about the importance of strengths-based remediation; ethical and legal considerations which relate to remediation; remediation strategies that can address trainees’ struggles; and specific strategies and methods that can be used to support trainees in their professional growth process. Attendees will be provided with practical strategies they can use as they facilitate challenging trainee remediation situations.

 Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will learn about the importance of student/supervisee remediation and educator/supervisor gatekeeping functions and common remediation issues.

  2. Participants will learn about a variety of remediation strategies,  skills and techniques, that can be used to facilitate strength-based remediation conversations  with students/supervisees. 

  3. Participants will learn a model they can use to apply strength-based remediation strategies.

Victoria E. Kress Ph.D./LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC

Victoria E. Kress Ph.D./LPCC-S, NCC, CCMHC has been a counselor for 3 decades and a counselor educator for over 2 decades. She is the director of the clinical mental health and addictions counseling programs at Youngstown State University. This winter she will be running to serve as the president of the American Counseling Association along with: Michelle Bradham-Cousar; Carlos Hipolito Delgado; and Anna Flores Locke. She served as a governor appointed member of the Ohio Counselor, Social Worker, and Marriage and Family Therapist Board and chaired the Counselor Professional Standards Committee. She has been the recipient of over 50 professional and community service awards, most of which for her advocacy, leadership, scholarship, community service, and mentorship initiatives. She has also received awards for her work with people who have intellectual disabilities, for empowering girls in her community, for her sexual assault prevention efforts, and for her child abuse advocacy work. She has published over 130 refereed articles and book chapters, and she has co-authored 7 books on counseling youth and adults. She has been recognized as one of the top producers/publishers in counseling journals over the past two decades. She served as an editor of the Journal of Mental Health Counseling, and as an editorial board member for many counseling journals. She is a past president of Chi Sigma Iota International, the Association for Humanistic Counseling, the Ohio Counseling Association, and the North Central Association for Counselor Education and Supervision; she is a past ACA Midwest Region Chair; she is a current member of the American Counseling Association’s governing council; and she has chaired or served on 100+ counseling committees. Over the past decade she has volunteered and worked in Malawi, Zambia, Rwanda, and Tanzania, promoting mental health awareness and training, and the professionalization of counseling in East Africa.

Jake J. Protivnak, Ph.D.

Jake J. Protivnak, Ph.D., is a Distinguished Professor and Counseling Program Director in the Department of Psychological Sciences and Counseling at Youngstown State University (YSU). He is a Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor – Supervising (LPCC-S), Licensed Professional School Counselor (LPSC), and a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC). Dr. Protivnak earned his doctorate in Counselor Education and Supervision from Ohio University and his master's degree in Community Counseling from Kent State University. Dr. Protivnak has 20+ years of experience as a counselor educator, counselor, and supervisor with work in clinical mental health, school, and college settings focusing primarily on counseling children, adolescents, and college-aged adults. He has authored 20+ refereed journal publications, 30+ book chapters and invited articles, and 100+ national, state, and regional presentations. Dr. Protivnak has received recognition from several professional organizations (e.g., American Counseling Association, Association for Counselor Education and Supervision, Ohio Counseling Association, Ohio University, Youngstown State University) for his leadership, scholarship, teaching, and service. Most recently, he received the Counselor of the Year award from the Ohio Counseling Association. Dr. Protivnak served as Past-President of the Ohio Counseling Association (OCA) and he is the current President-Elect of Chi Sigma Iota (CSI) – International. Within his local community, Dr. Protivnak is a founding board member and Past-President of State of Mind: Hudson, a non-profit advocacy organization composed of individuals from various non-mental health professions working together to increase mental health awareness and reduce stigma of seeking support for mental health issues.
