Utilizing Photovoice in Counselor Education
The session will be focused on learning the photovoice methodology and how to utilize it with congruence in the field of counselor education.
Course overview
This session introduces participants to photovoice, a participatory research and pedagogical methodology that uses photography and narrative reflection to explore lived experience, voice, and social context. Participants will learn the theoretical foundations and core principles of photovoice, along with practical guidance for designing and implementing it within counselor education settings.
Learning Objectives:
- Define photovoice and describe its core principles, theoretical foundations, and purpose as a participatory methodology.
- Identify the key steps involved in implementing a photovoice project, including participant engagement, photo elicitation, and narrative reflection.
- Explain how photovoice can be applied with congruence in counselor education, particularly in relation to empowerment, reflexivity, and culturally responsive practice.

Corrine Sackett, Ph.D., LMFT
Dr. Corrine R. Sackett is a Professor of Counselor Education at Clemson University and a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. She earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Virginia Tech and her Master of Arts in Marriage and Family Therapy from Appalachian State University. One of Dr. Sackett’s main lines of inquiry centers on advocacy around societal issues, primarily utilizing photovoice. Dr. Sackett has collaborated with many counselors-in-training and practicing counselors on photovoice projects, as it is an excellent fit for their roles. Her other area of research involves exploring, accessing, and integrating client experiences of the counseling process.
