Course overview
The United States of America is among the top countries that receive international students because of its high-quality education, diversity, and global labor market (Batalova & Israel, 2021). Therefore, the number of enrolled international students increases every day, especially enrollment in mental health counseling master’s programs across the country. (Lertora & Croffie, 2020). While a significant representation of international counseling students has been seen within the past couple of years, the population has received limited attention in counselor education and supervision, especially regarding their personal and professional needs and expectations related to student visa limitations and licensing procedures (Qi et al., 2019). Consequently, this presentation will discuss previous research and provide knowledge on international students' experiences, explore personal and professional barriers faced by international students enrolled in mental health counseling master’s programs, and provide suggestions on how to support this group and advocate for them.
Learning Objectives:
- After this workshop, participants will have a larger breadth of knowledge about international students enrolled in mental health counseling programs.
- After this workshop, participants will be able to identify challenges and barriers experienced by international counseling students, especially the Licensure procedure.
- After this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of supporting the international student body and be able to advocate for this group on micro, meso, and macro-level
